Route description |
Leg 1: Start of leg GR: SN775817
| Leaving the car park and facing the now disused Dyffryn Castell Hotel you will see a gate across the road on the right hand side of the building. Carefully cross the road and go over the stile adjoing the gate, keeping the line of trees to your right. Cross the temporary fence to go along the path which starts at the edge of the stream and keeping the fence to your right, walk up the 100 yards to another stile. Walk on over this stile and follow the discernible path generally near the stream, until after about 150 yards you will see yet another stile 40 yards right of the stream. |
Leg 2: Start of leg GR: SN774819
| Cross this second style and follow the path which again keeps between the stream on your left and the fence on your right. After about 300 yards you will come to a wet area which the path crosses by means of a simple short plank bridge. Within a few yards you will arrive at a style in the fence on your right. |
Leg 3: Start of leg GR: SN776823
| Cross the stile and walk diagonally upwards across the grassy field in front of you. As you ascend look towards the top fence line. About 50 yards to the right of where a small shallow dry stream depression crosses the top fence you will see another stile. Walk up to the stile and cross it. |
Leg 4: Start of leg GR: SN777826
| After crossing the stile at the top of the field follow the path for about 400 yards taking about 15 mins, which starts by going diagonally upwards from the style, steeply through moorland vegetation, and which gradually curves to go directly up the hill. As you get to the top of the hill the path forms a T junction with another path going from your left to your right. Keep a careful eye open for this junction as the path is not particularly conspicuous. As of November 2020 there is a waymarking post at the junction but if it is not there then mark the spot as you need to recognise it on your return. Take confidence from the fact that on reaching this point you will have accomplished the steepest ascent on the route. |
Leg 5: Start of leg GR: SN778829
| At the path junction turn right and follow the path more or less along the contour. You will see the A44 road well below you as it bends sharply towards Llangurig. After about half a mile, after going around a hillock or two more or less on the contour you will see a forest coming into view on your left. Keep following the path as it gradually ascends and traverses some wet ground where the path may not be very clear as it gets closer to the forest boundary, going over a conspicuous hump before finally hitting the forest boundary.fence. Perhaps fifty yards from this point you will see a stile in the fence. In the adjoing woodland there is a shelterd place for a refreshment break. |
Leg 6: Start of leg GR: SN785838
| Other than to take a break do not cross the stile but continue along the forest boundary, crossing a stile after a couple of hundred yards, then under the power lines serving the Cefn Croes wind turbine development, on to a track. Follow the track along as it goes through a gate and then after two hundred yards the track turns sharp left and then sharp right. This point is close to a mile from the start of the leg, |
Leg 7: Start of leg GR: SN786848
| At this zig zag in the track turn left to walk reasonably close to and parallel to,the woodland boundary for approx. 450 yards to a gate in a mountain fence. |
Leg 8: Start of leg GR: SN784851
| Go through the gate and turn right to proceed along the fence, whilst keeping it on your right, to walk along it the remaining 1.25 miles to the summit of Pumlumon at 2483 ft (752m) above sea level. There is a rough igloo like stone windbreak at the top in which you can sit to eat your sandwiches. |
Leg 9: Start of leg GR: SN790869
| Return the way you have come. It will take you two hours or so down to Dyffryn Castell (excluding any breaks). |
